Fin de semana (The weekend)

On Saturday, my friend Allison and I signed up for a trip to go to Lake Atitlan. Some people claim that this is the most beautiful lake in the world and so I have been wanting to see it.

We were suppose to be waiting in the street at 4:45 in front of the house we are staying at. That was a very eye opening experience. The house where we are staying is on the mercardo (market) street. About every 5 minutes, a chicken bus would stop and whole families including little children would get off the bus and drag huge bags of stuff over to the market. I think this is a seven day a week ritual for these families. It makes me even more grateful for how good I have it.

When the van family arrived after about 45 minutes, we were on our way. I didn't realize that part of the cost of the trip was a roller coaster ride to the lake. It was one of the most wicked roads I have ever seen. We had to make a short pit stop because one girl got dreadfully sick.

The lake is very large but the largest city on the lake is Panajachel so that is where we started. We got on a boat in this town and we went to San Marcos. After San Marcos, we went to San Pedro followed by San Domingo and San Antonio.

If anybody would like to see more pictures, I have uploaded some on smugmug. They can be found at www.h31719.smugmug.com

On Sunday, Allison and I set out to find a church that spoke both English and Spanish. One of the girls living in our house goes to church there but she was gone for the weekend and we forgot to ask for a map. We knew the general direction so we headed in the general direction and attempted to ask five different people if they knew of the church. Nobody knew, but they pointed us to a different church that had an English service. The English service ended up being three others and Allison and myself. We went through a litergy and sang two songs. At first I was disappointed that we couldn't find the other church, but it was very neat finding some fellow believers who think it is important enough to get together every week to have an English service. In many ways this service spoke more to me than the orchestrated worship services that I am use to. It was very impromptu. I even got to help pick out the songs. This is the closest I have ever come to singing a solo in church because it was primarily myself and one of the other ladies singing.

Allison and I head back on Friday. I am ready. I love it here, but I do not like living out of a suitcase.

Time to go study more. Adios!
